PROGRAM NOTES

In 1992, a 19 year old Italian musician, Nicola Martino, committed suicide while serving in the army. A group of his friends decided not to let grief take over, and raised funds so that an orchestral work could be commissioned and dedicated to his memory. The Centro Europeo di Toscolano sponsorized the project, and "A un Amico Sconosciuto" ("To an Unknown Friend") is the result. In the various sections of this one movement work I tried to evoke, albeit obviously filtered through my own emotions, the different moods that must have gone through Nicola's young mind and culminated in the final irreversible tragedy.
